    A Silent Shadow

Post  Twilight on Mon Mar 02, 2009 7:37 pm

The black-and-white wolf crouched in the bushes, her eyes focused on the doe and fawn in front of her. "Now, Rain," she whispered quietly to the black pup she knew was somewhere behind her. "Watch this. This is how you hunt larger prey." The she-wolf's amber eyes were trained right on the doe, waiting to make her move. Myth watched as the doe turned it's back to the bush concealing the black she-wolf. A fatal mistake. Myth exploded from the bush that concealed her, charging straight at the doe. The animal paniced and fled for the nearest trees, it's fawn following close by. Perfect. This always worked; the fawn was too slow and didn't know where to go, so it's instinct was to follow it's mother. All Myth had to do was chase the doe until it's fawn fell into place. The she-wolf pushed her legs faster, hoping to catch the fawn before it could disappear into the undergrowth. She could hear their hooves thundering on the ground in a frenzied attempt to escape. But it was all futile. Myth finally got close enough to the fawn to reach a paw out and trip the small animal. The fawn gave a squeak of distress and fell to the ground, skidding a few feet as well while the mother continued to flee. Quickly, the she-wolf delivered the final blow. Sinking her fangs into the fawn's neck before it could get up, the small animal sank to the ground, breathing it's last breath. Myth kept her hold on the fawn's neck, tasting it's succulent blood seep into her mouth.

Rain crouched down in the bushes just as Myth did, he looked past her at the gruop of deer that was infornt of the duo. He pricked his ears up when she spoke to him, this would be the first lesson he had since he tryed to catch a baby doe on his own which resulted in the broken leg he had now. The black pup was still able to get around but at a slow pace, Myth often carried him so wouldn't aggravate his injury. Rain's eyes followed her like a hawk, he wanted to learn how to do what Myth could do someday. As she drew closer to the doe his tail began to sweep across the ground, once she was able to get it to the ground Rain knew she had caught it. He yipped, excited about her catch. He stood up holding up his broken hind leg to keep off the ground and ran towards Myth which was more of a wobbly troth with only three paws to support him, "you did it mother" he yiped as he clumsily ran toward her

The woods were especially loud today, lots of birds squawking, which didn't appeal to the tastes of the wolfess down below. Her paws ached from her travels, and her jowls dry, thirsting for a source of liquid. Her sandy pelt blended in with the yellow grass, and the brown tree bark. Her movements were smooth, and gentle, as if watching every step for debris. Her head was held high, her ears erect in a forward position, listening for anything, while her nose was scenting any source of prey. Then she caught something through her senses, something she hadn't seen or heard in a long time.

Wolves. Her nose picked it up first, then she could hear speech from the two that she had identified. She could only hear one, the other she had to rely entirely on scent to even think that it was there. She was probably able to tell whether they were male or female, but Vaicha was bored, and somewhat lazy at the moment, so she didn't feel like doing so. Her paws picked up a small amount of speed, and she dived into some bushes, where she could watch the two canines up ahead. "I think they have something, Rashii, what do you think they have?" Called the femme into her head, grinning a bit to the thought of a meal. "It smells good, whatever it is." Her frame leaned forward a bit, hoping to get even a tiny bit of a better look, but her luck ran out as a couple of nesting birds residing in the bush fled.

Great, now there could be some trouble.

The she-wolf released her firm hold on the young deer's neck, raising her head to see Rain, her beloved "pup" wobbling to her from the cover of the bushes. "Mind your leg, now, Rain," she warned, but gave him a smile instead of a stern look. He was always rambunctious and never thought before he acted. "Eat up, I'm not that hungry," she added, licking off the remainder of the fawn's blood from her maw. She lowered her head and opened her jowels to take a bite, but when her fangs closed around the tender meat, a rustling of birds nearby distracted her. Normally she would dismiss this, but the birds sounded like something spooked them. Myth raised her head and faced right at the bushes where she had just come, her amber eyes staring straight into the leaves. "Rain," Myth said sharply, her eyes still fixed on the leaves. She pricked her ears and her muscles tensed. She didn't want anything to harm Rain. The she-wolf took a step forward, standing protectivley right above the black pup. "Come out," Myth said simply in a slightly commanding tone, her fur bristling slightly. The scent of the freshly killed fawn was still filling her nose, she couldn't make out what this animal was.

Rain's tounge lolled out of his mouth by the time he reached Myth, he was panting a little, "ok mom i'll be more careful." He told her that many times before but he just never could seem to actually be careful, he wasn't the bravest or the most outgoing pup but then it was just Myth and himself. He felt like he could come out of his shell, Myth was everything to him now of course his heart still felt the sadness of losing his real parents but Myth filled the void that was missing in his heart. He smiled at her then lowered hi head to bite into the elk with his tiny fangs, before he could tear any meat away he could her Myth call his name and the tone of her voice told him there must be danger around. He released his grip from the doe and hid under Myth, his ears flattened to his head and he slightly lowered himself onto the gound

The fay had known nothing good would come out of her mistake, and yet she still winced to the sharp tone of the female a mere few feet before her. She could see a small pup hide beneath the wolf's body, which was obviously what she was so protective. The she-wolf seemed to have no idea whether she was a mere hare or a grizzly, but being herself, she didn't care. One of her paws stepped forward, and the other fore paw followed, revealing the face of the dust-colored wolfess. Her ears laid flat against her skull, and her neck lowered slightly to add to the appearance that she meant no harm. Before she could do anything more, a wonderful aroma drifted into her nostrils, and her legs came to a halt. The smell was none other than fresh meat, which Vaicha hadn't had in a long time, not since her leave of her former pack. Her salmon-pink tongue swiped across her lips, and she could feel her jowls start to water, waiting anxiously to taste the delicate meat.

"Look, Rashii, that thing they have is food!"

The femme grinned a bit, thinking over what it would taste like. It'd been a couple months since she had any kind of meat that was less than three days old, and not fish. Throughout her thoughts of what some meat would taste like, she had forgotten all about the other wolves. The fay's eyes focused back on them, still seeing them in defensive positions. It would usually be that by now they would either have chased her off, attacked her, or run away, but it seemed that they were still deciding. But, hey, Vaicha wasn't complaining, more time to try and convince them to give her a free meal. She was tricky like that: Hiding what she wanted from others, persuading them to give her what she wants. This time was no different, but she was rusty; She hadn't done so since, well, she last tasted fresh meat.

Myth felt Rain shrink underneath her at this wolf's sudden presence. If we hadn't of been hunting, I would have scented her earlier and we could have avoided her alltogether, she muttered to herself. Myth cocked her head at the wolf's words. "Rashii?" she repeated, making the word sound like a question. "IS that your name?" she promted. She wasn't sure what this wolf was after, but she didn't want to give up this fawn. They were plentiful and easy to catch, but she wouldn't find one as tender as this for a while. Rain needed the most tender; or at least in her eyes he did.

(Not as long as I'd like it to be. xD)

Rain didn't know what the wolf wanted or intended to do, what if she wanted to hurt him or Myth. What if he ended up alone again because of this wolf. i whimper escaped hi jaws at the thought of losing Myth, why couldn't this wolf just go back where it was and just leave them alone. they didn't have anything the wolf would want except for the elk and he knew myth wasn't just going to let any stranger take it.

The sandy female seemed to dismiss the wolves yet again, but this time looked around and listened to the woods. It wasn't a bad day, just noisy. By the time the femme was ready to look back at the canines, a voice got her ears to pull back and listen. Her head followed, looking at the she-wolf that had spoke. The dusty wolfess was ready to reply, but was cut short by another question, connected to the first, in a way.

"Oh no, no, no, no, no."

She disproved the question easily and normally, but to any 'normal' wolf it'd be quite bizarre. Vaicha didn't ever talk about Rashii, he was more like only her friend, one that she knew would never be able to be shared, though she didn't know the exact facts. A chirp of a bird caught her ear again, but this time she trotted over to the tree and leaned on it, looking upward and holding a fore leg up. Her nose sniffed, trying to find it, and without luck, she landed back on all fours and tried a bush. Again, unable to find the fowl, she sat a few feet away from the two wolves, her ears perked forward, towards the canines, to make sure she caught anything they told her.

Myth watched the wolf carefully, not losening her protective position over Rain at all. She was so potective over this little pup; she'd never had pups of her own before, and she loved this pup like he was her own. She wasn't going to let some rogue wolf harm him, let alone get any closer. She was already closer than she wanted the new she-wolf to be, and it was making Myth uneasy. The she-wolf's words confused her, making her slightly cock her head to the side. "Then who's Rashii..?" she asked, unsure of this wolf. Could she have been talking about another wolf that came with her. Uneasily, Myth glanced around the clearing, but she could only see this wolf. "And what's your name?" She was growing impatient with this wolf already.

Rain's eyes moved with the wolves movements, not missing anything she did.He cocked his head to the side slight, not knowing what it was she was doing. It looked as if she was randomly moving from one spot to another, he moved a but farther back under Myth. still making sure to keep his leg off the ground.

It would appear that the black female was getting angry and more protective as time ticked by, but Vaicha didn't really mind. She had no intentions of harming the pup, or the white-marked wolfess, either. She moved her paws to stand back up, careful not to make the female attack, and wagged her tail slightly. Ignoring the first question, she answered the second with a smile. "Why, I'm Vaicha! Vaicha Dunean to be exact, but, oh, just call me Vaicha if you don't mind me asking." Perhaps her name would calm the ebony wolfess. "But I want your name before I say mine," She said gently, looking at them with a wolfish grin. Her question really didn't make sense, considering she already said her name. But Vaicha grew tired of waiting for an answer. She looked back, and, spotting her wagging tail, gave chase; around and around. But soon that bored her too, and she plopped into a sit, with her back at the wolves, panting lightly from her odd little game. Remembering them, she stood up quickly and made a half-spin to face them, then sat back down. It was just now that Vaicha noticed the small, black pup's leg; it was turned in a crooked angle, which probably meant it was broken.

"Oh, what happened to you?" She asked softly, her smile fading into a look of curiousity. "Did you hurt your leg?" Of course he did, why else would it look that way? "How did you break it?" She took a few steps closer, her head a little low to show she was merely curious, and tried to figure it out herself. After closing the distance by a foot or so, she stopped, but still stood instead of sitting down like she had been. Then that wonderful aroma drifted into her nose again, the smell of fresh meat. She couldn't identify what it was exactly by smell, only eating fish and all that, so she peered around the two wolves to take a quick glance. It was a small fawn, but Vaicha was hungry enough it could've been a mouse for all she cared. She quickly turned back to the wolves again, making sure not to imply that she wanted any, as she'd only really looked at it for a couple of seconds. "You should eat, broken bones always heal better when you eat!" Her excitement was breaking free, but for a moment her face looked like she was listening to something. "Oh, no, no, no, Rashii, I wouldn't dare! They are friends, and friends don't do that to eachother," after that, she returned her smile and looked at them sheepishly with it.

Rain lowered himself all the way to the ground he was fritghened of the wolf in front his mother and himself. the way she spoke confused him, he couldn't understand what she meant. The black pup wiggled his way back a few inches away from the brown wolf. why did she have to show up, him and myth were having such a good time. He just wanted to be with Myth he didn't care about anyone else right now. was it really to much to ask just to be alone with his mother? he watched her with his dead turned slight to the side, as she chased her tail, like she completely forgotten they were there, she was such an odd wolf.

But her sudden interest in him throw him off, why did she even care that he had broken his leg. He didn't feel comfortable answering any of the wolf's questions he just inched farther back and whimpered.

Your name before I say mine? Myth repeated mentally, utterly confused as to what this wolf was up to. One moment the brown wolf was talking straight to her, then the next she was speaking to someone named Rashii. The unknown frightened her slightly; making her even more protective over Rain than she had been before. "I am Myth," she responded easily, though her amber eyes were guarded while she looked upon Vaicha. "This is Rain," she introduced the pup cowering behind her with a slight movement of her head.

Getting ready to speak again, Myth stopped herself when the brown wolf before her turned abruptly and chased her tail as if she were a pup and had forgotten the other two were still even there. Such an odd one this is, she murmured mentally to herself.

Myth's ears pulled back when the newcomer began speaking to Rain, though she didn't interfere. When it was clear that Rain didn't wish to speak to her, Myth answered instead. "Hunting incidend," she said. The memory of when Rain's leg snapped because of the deer sent a wave of regret washing through the black wolfess. He'd wanted to hunt, yet she knew he was too young. And yet she allowed him to follow her and this came out of it. She'd been irresponsible.

"Oh, no, no, no, Rashii, I wouldn't dare! They are friends, and friends don't do that to eachother," the wolfess before her said. The question popped up again in her head, only this time more persistant. "Who is Rashii?" she repeated.

The sandy wolfess smiled as Myth introduced herself and the pup, Rain, though it faded as she saw him begin backing away from her. Had he no manners? "It's not nice to make somebody else introduce you when you're there too, you know, Rain. I had to learn that too!" She gave him a small grin, then returned her look to Myth. Her name really did seem to have made her somewhat less edgy, but the static still formed around her and the pup strongly. However, she found it quite unsettling to see Rain and Myth watching her with odd stares when she had finished her little game. It wasn't very nice to stare. But this time she let the thought pass, and instead waited for an answer to her questions about the black pup.

Though it looked like it hurt to say it, Myth spoke of a hunting incident they had. She only said the two words "hunting incident," however, which didn't really fulfill her interests enough. As she thought of what wouldn't be insulting to the female, Myth asked the earlier question more persistently than before. Not wanting to chase away potential friends, she dismissed the idea of answering. "What kind of hunting incident? Birds? Rabbits? Pheasants?!" Refraining from raising her voice too high in excitement, Vaicha smiled brighter, and her entire face seemed to brighten in joy at the words, "pheasant" especially. She hadn't had pheasant in a long time. It was her favorite. "Little Rain, I'm sorry to bother you again but I was curious.. Were you born in the rain?" Though a random question, she thought it fit to replace her skipped answer.

Rain watched the wolf carefully, she was so odd. Something just didn't seem right about her, but he just couldn't put his paw on it. Maybe it was because a split second ago she looked like she was a pup also chasing her tail. Adults didn't do that, or that was what he had thought; he never so his mother do it. After Myth introduced him the strange wolf turned her attention back to him again, why couldn't she just go away, he just wanted to be with his mother. Was he really asking to much, but then again maybe she was right maybe he was being rude. he just lowed his head onto the the cold snow, "I-I'm sorry" he spoke in a quiet tone.

Rain watched as she tried to ask Myth about how he was hurt, looking back at it now he could she it was his fault. He grew to excited and got distracted and that was when that fun rammed into his leg. Msybe he was too young to go after a fawn by himself Buy mother told him he could do it, and he did really want to to please her. It would have been great if he was able to take it down, all the praise he would have gotten. but in the end all he ended out with was a broken leg. He was snapped out of his thoughts when the wolf asked him another question, this time he deiced to answer he couldn't remember if he ever told Myth where he was born, "I was born close to some mountains, i don't really know where though" he said in his shy voice once more.

Myth simply didn't know what to make of this wolf, though she was confident the female wouldn't do anything to harm them, Myth still wasn't convinced enough to let Rain eat, like he needed to. Food and rest is what he needed right now, and thanks to this new wolf he wasn't getting any of it right now. Myth had to make absolutely sure she could trust Vaicha in order for her to drop her guard only even slightly. Rain was too valuable to her for her to slip up again. That one moment when she allowed Rain to go after the fawn still tugged at her heart, and she didn't know how she could bear letting something else like that happening to him. How could she have been so irresponcible? He's much too young to hunt a deer, even if it was just a fawn. Mice were where to start, but now thanks to her stupidity, he'd have to wait even longer to even hunt one of those.

Myth was taken back to reality when the wolfess spoke, but this time to Rain. She allowed it, and smiled when Rain replied shyly. He wasn't one for conversation, that's for sure. What made the smile disappear was when the wolfess ignored her question and again asked another one of hers, then spoke to Rain again. This irked Myth, making the black wolfess shake her head and become more unsure about her trust in this newcomer. "I will not answer further questions until you answer mine," she stated simply, her amber eyes staring evenly into the wolfess' green ones. "Who is Rashii?" she repeated, this time with more power, dividing up the words into individual sentences as she said each one with space between them. She was determined, if nothing else.

The young female smiled as Rain seemed to be warming up slightly to her, even if hardly at all, looking at him with cheerful eyes. Her tail began to wag again as she listened to him speak, sitting down in a sloppy position. "Oh, mountains are fun to climb! Or so I've heard.. I was actually born on some plains, though I'd like to climb some mountains sometime.." Her tail wagged faster, and she gave them a larger, more sheepish grin as she waited for one of them to talk again. However, her happy mood quickly turned to a serious and less talkative one, her tail halting in place and her smile slowly fading into a frown. "No more until I tell you what you want," she repeated, adding a sigh at the end. "But I like my new friends.. Are you sure you don't want to be friends anymore? She let the question stay for a bit, waiting for them to answer.

Either she hadn't heard them or they didn't answer, Vaicha grew impatient and decided the she-wolf still wished to know. "Oh, okay... I'll tell you. I just hope we can still at least not hate each other.." Taking in a deep breath, then exhaling, she kept her frown as she spoke. "Rashii is my friend, I don't know if he's real or not but.. I personally think he is. I actually named him, though.. He never said his name." Her ears flattened and she turned her head so as she could look at the ground rather than them. She readied her sitting stance so she could stand up and run if she needed, though still remained fairly calm. Thankfully he hadn't spoken to her again, so she wasn't forced to talk to him while she waited for the two wolves to reply, or, which was more likely, chase her away.

Rain continued to watch the female with from under Myth, it liked she was getting excited from him just talking to her. He watched her tail has it came into view and moved back out of his sight. It look like she was just a big puppy, thinking like that made him relax a bit. His ears moved back upright though he still kept his body close to the ground. But that relaxed feeling didn't last long, Myth sounded like she was getting angry with the wolf though he didn't know why.

His ears folded flat onto his head once more, Myth mentioned someone named Rashii. The wolf didn't something about them before but he didn't see him around. Maybe the person she was talking about was close by, but when she finally answered it sounded like her friend was imaginary. Could adults have imaginary friends? it was odd to hear at least to him anyway adults could be so confusing.

Myth found herself getting more confused with each word this wolf spoke. She was an odd one, that was for sure. She had never met a wolf who had an imaginary friend. Admittedly, she had had one when she was just a pup, but she had quickly grown out of that phaze and moved on. This wolf really was just a grown up pup. The female's posture told her than she was ready to bolt at any moment. Had others given her trouble because of that one fact? Myth certainly didn't want that. Vaicha didn't look like she was about to attack them or cause any harm, but she still wasn't quite trustworthy of her. Not enough to let her guard down around Rain, at least.

Rain reminded her so much of the other pup she'd fostered not long ago. She had been the sweetest little white furball; so full of energy and spunk. The small pup had lost her family only a day before Myth herself had found the small thing. Twilight was her name. She'd never forget.

Myth shook her head, coming back to reality. She'd formed a small grin across her maw and had apparently spaced out for a few seconds, remembering the old times. "Well, that's an answer, at least," Myth said simply, not knowing how to respond correctly to that statement. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the fawn carcass again, untouched. "Rain," she said in a soft voice. "You can go ahead and eat. You need your strength for that leg of yours."

The sandy wolfess was dead silent. The only noise that came from her maw that of breathing. Of course, as she observed, everyone seemed to be. That was a good sign in Vaicha's eyes, as that meant they weren't mad... Yet. She could tell they were at least somewhat uneasy; She could feel it emanating from their bodies. And yet it still remained quiet.

The young female watched on, turning slowly from the pup to the wolfess every few seconds to see if their posture changed or whatever else they could do that would be different. At one point, the female looked like she as remembering something, her eyes not focused on anything in particular, and a grin creased her maw. Almost immediately afterwords, though, she must have come back to the present, as her pupils turned and focused back onto Vaicha before speaking. "Well, that's an answer, at least," she said, and this made the sandy, young female cock her head slightly, as if a pup that didn't understand something properly. She held that stance for a while, listening as the ebony Myth spoke to the black Rain. Even after she looked finished with speaking, she still stood silent, seemingly trying to make sense of her response.

"No yelling... No yelling. No yelling!" Vaicha's eyes grew wide, and her tail began to wag wildly out of control, and her stance changed into a standing one, though Myth couldn't see it, looking at the carcass and the pup. The young female galloped over to her, pouncing playfully and rolling onto her side. Vai became worried again, though, as the female could think of it as an attack. The Dunean female hoped not, as she was just overjoyed that her new friends didn't hate her for her other friend.

Rain kept his yellow eyes on the pup like adult female, the black pup felt nervous around her, she acted so strange. She was an adult like Myth but something was different about her, but he really couldn't put his paw on it. What could make an adult act like a pup anyway, the solution just eluded him. But maybe a big "pup" would be fun to play with. but on the other hand she was big, she would probably be rough to him. His ears stood up straight on his head now and his tail was wagging slightly; the thought of her just being a big puppy made her seem less scary to him.

Rain's tail was wagging back and forth at a steady pace, and he inched his way just in front of Myth. she didn't seem like a bad wolf and maybe she would play with him, if myth let him that is. He looked up at Myth as she told him he could eat, his tail wagged even more wildly, "Ok mother" He limped over to the carcass and begain to pull at the delicious meat. He was only able to eat one peice when he looked up at Myth and the female again, it looked like they were playing and he couldn't resist running towards them while favoring his broken leg. he play bowed in front of the two wolves yipping at them.

Myth was confused. Why was the wolfess so quiet? Is she talking to this Rashii person? a thought asked. She still wasn't too sure about that fact. Never before had she met a wolf with an imaginary friend. She could feel Rain's small tail wagging under her, tickling her underbelly. Though it wasn't a fast, enthused wag, it was still a sign that he was happy. If she didn't bother him, Myth didn't see any reason of why she couldn't stay. Rain's responce seemed to break the heavy silence, and she watched after him as he made his way to the carcass, limping as he went. That familiar feeling of guilt found it's way into the black wolfess's heart again as she watched him. How could she have been so careless? Some mother she was. "No yelling... No yelling. No yelling!" came the newcomer's voice. "Ye-?" came her responce, before a flurry of brown fur overcame her and Vaicha was on the ground in front of her. Instincts told her to snarl, and so she did... At least until she saw Rain's playful stance. The move wasn't an attack; she was playing. Was this how she showed her happiness? Myth's ears were back and she was standing straight, though her back end looked as if it were limp, nearly in a sitting position. ... What the heck, she decided, and dropped into a play bow in front of them both.

Vai, still atop the female, quickly pulled away as she saw, and heard, the snarl. Had she done it wrong? Did they change their minds about her? The tan she-wolf backed up a few steps, folding her ears against her head and lowering her body closer to the ground to show that she meant no harm. She had seen Rain's playful bow, though... He must have known it was to play, not to fight. Then, all of a sudden, Myth jumped up into a playful bow, like the pup, and the young female took that as a go-ahead. A sheepish smile crossing her face, she also dropped into a play-bow, her tail wagging wildly out of control again. She pounced on Myth, taking off quickly and rolling onto her back beside Rain, gently pushing him over with her paw. Swinging her body over to her side so she could stand up, she dropped, yet again, into a playful bow in front of them both.

The sandy wolfess whirled around in circles, chasing her tail yet again. Perhaps they wouldn't stare now, since they were playing? Since they were celebrating? But, as usual, her fatigue soon caught up with her, and she had to plop onto the grass, panting. Her tail still wagged, though, and the sheepish smile didn't seem to grow any smaller. Her ears were also perked up, and the thought crossed her mind again: Were they friends? In her eyes, to her, they were, but they could think differently. "... Friends?" After speaking, Vai thought that perhaps that was too straightforward, or too little so. Hopefully they got the idea.
